At a glance
- You can learn as a guest, without an account. An account needs only an email address, a password and a name you choose.
- We use your information to run Voca Fun: to save your progress across devices and to run buddies, classes, duels and party rooms. We don't sell it.
- Voca Fun has no analytics or tracking tools of its own. The free version of the iOS and Android apps shows ads from Google AdMob, which uses device identifiers as described below. Pro members and the web app see no ads.
- Other learners can see your name, avatar and some of your progress, such as XP and streak. They never see your email address.
- You can delete your account and its data in the app at any time: Profile → Delete account.
Who we are
Voca Fun is owned, developed and operated by Nguyen Thanh Thien, an independent developer based in Vietnam with no registered company behind the app ("we", "us"). Nguyen Thanh Thien is the controller of the personal data described here: the data controller under the EU and UK GDPR, and the personal data controller under Vietnam's Law on Personal Data Protection.

What we collect
If you use Voca Fun as a guest
- Your settings and your progress stay on your device. We don't receive them.
- When you start or join a duel or a party room as a guest, the app opens a guest session with our servers and keeps using it on that device. We receive a random ID, the name and avatar you choose, and your results in rooms. Whenever you pick or change a guest name, it is checked against our list of offensive words; the check doesn't keep it.
- You can buy Pro without an account. The app then opens a guest session if it hasn't yet, and the purchase is linked to that session's random ID. When you later sign in or create an account on that device, the purchase moves to your account (see Purchases below).
If you create an account
- Email address and password, to sign you in. The password is stored only as a salted hash by our database provider, so nobody can read it, us included.
- Profile: the name you choose (up to 30 characters) and the avatar and border you pick from Voca Fun's own pictures. Voca Fun doesn't accept photo uploads.
What you do in Voca Fun (with an account)
- Learning progress: XP, streak, words learned, how often you answered each word right or wrong, your best scores and how often you use each activity, and a record of each finished activity (which one, solo, duel or party, score, stars, right and wrong answers, time taken and date).
- World map: the land you live in, and when the app was last open, which shows others whether you're online (see What other learners can see).
- Word banks you make: their names, words, meanings and examples.
- Buddies: your buddy code, the requests you send and receive, and your buddies.
- Classes: the classes you open or join, with their names, passwords, notes, tasks and goals; your progress on tasks; the cheers (stickers) you send; and class notices.
- Duels, party rooms and challenges: the room, who is in it, the words used, everyone's results, and the challenges you send and receive.
- Safety: the people you block; the reports you send (the reason, the note you write if any, the name and avatar of the learner or class you report, and where it happened, such as a land visit, a challenge or a room and its code); and wrong attempts at class passwords and buddy codes, kept to stop guessing. Guests can send reports from a room too.
Purchases
If you subscribe to Voca Fun Pro, Apple or Google takes the payment, and we never see your card details. Through RevenueCat we receive what you bought, its status and dates, store transaction IDs, and your store country and currency, linked to your Voca Fun account ID, or to your guest session's random ID if you buy without an account. When you then sign in or create an account on that device, the app sends us that guest session's key once, so we can check it's yours and move the purchase to your account in RevenueCat. The iOS and Android apps also connect to RevenueCat when they start, for everyone, with a random ID (your Voca Fun account ID once you sign in, or your guest session's ID once you have one), so it can show Pro's prices and restore purchases; no name or email is sent to RevenueCat.
Ads in the free version
See Ads and your choices.
Technical information
When the apps or the web app reach our servers, our providers (Supabase and Cloudflare) process standard technical information such as your IP address, the time, the request, and your device or browser type, to deliver the service, keep it secure and fix problems.
On your device only
These stay on your device and aren't sent to us: your settings (including the study packs you pick), guest progress, reminder times, and your ad consent choices. The name and avatar you last used as a guest are also kept on the device, so they're filled in next time. Your device's own backup (for example Android's backup to your Google account) may include them. On the web, your sign-in session and settings are kept in your browser's local storage; the web app doesn't set cookies.
What we don't collect
Voca Fun doesn't access your contacts, photos, camera, microphone or precise location, and it contains no analytics or crash-reporting tools. Pronunciations come from your device's or browser's built-in text-to-speech. Some browsers use online voices, which send the word being spoken to the browser's maker.
On Android, the first time Voca Fun starts after being installed from Google Play, it reads the Google Play install referrer once, so an invite link still opens after installing. It uses only the invite in it (for example "join/ABC234").
How we use it, and our legal bases
| Why | Information | Legal basis |
|---|---|---|
| Run your account, sign you in, and save your progress across devices | Account, profile, learning progress | Providing the service you asked for (contract) |
| Run buddies, classes, duels, party rooms, land visits, challenges and weekly boards | Profile, progress, buddies, classes and rooms | Contract |
| Provide Pro and check your subscription | Purchases | Contract |
| Show ads in the free version | Ad information (see below) | Your consent where the law requires it (for example in the EEA, the UK and Switzerland, and Apple's tracking permission on iOS); elsewhere our legitimate interest in funding a free version |
| Keep Voca Fun safe: act on reports, enforce blocks and the Terms of Use, refuse offensive names, stop guessing and abuse | Safety and technical information | Legitimate interests; legal obligations |
| Fix problems and keep the service running | Technical information | Legitimate interests |
| Meet legal duties, such as tax records or lawful requests | What the law requires | Legal obligation |
Where the law where you live relies on consent (for example Vietnam's Law on Personal Data Protection), we rely on the consent you give when you create an account or first pick a name (where you tick "I agree" to the Terms of Use, with this policy linked beside it), and when you use a feature. You can withdraw it at any time by stopping the feature or deleting your account; that doesn't affect what was done before.
We don't make decisions about you that have legal or similarly significant effects by automated means alone. We don't use your information to train AI models.
What other learners can see
Voca Fun is social, so some of your information is shown to other people. Your email address is never shown to other learners. Your profile isn't secret: besides the places below, other people using Voca Fun can look up your name, avatar, account ID, and when your profile was created and last changed, so don't put anything private in your name. Rooms aren't private either: a room's code, its words, and the names, avatars and results of the people in it can be looked up by others using Voca Fun.
| Who | What they see |
|---|---|
| Anyone with your buddy invite link | Your name, your avatar, and whether you're a Pro member |
| Anyone with your class invite link | The class name, the host's name and avatar, whether the host is a Pro member, and how many members the class has. The class password is never in a link. |
| Learners visiting the land you live in | Your name, avatar, total XP, and whether you're online now |
| Your buddies, and anyone with a buddy request between you | Your name, avatar, XP, streak, land, and whether you're online or in a room. Buddies also see your right answers this week on the buddies' weekly board. |
| Members of your classes | Your name, avatar, when you joined, whether you're online or in a room, your right answers this week on the class board, which tasks you took or finished and when, your place and bonus XP, and the cheers you send |
| Hosts of your classes | All of the above, plus how many of a task's words you've got right, whether you chose "Not now", and how the class does on each word. Hosts can see and share the class password, and can remove and block members. |
| People in the same duel or party room | The name and avatar you use there, and your score and results |
| Someone you challenge, or who challenges you | Your name and avatar |
Online status: while you're signed in and the app is open, it tells our servers so about every 45 seconds, and for about two minutes after that, buddies, classmates and visitors to your land see you as online.
Blocking and reports: people you block, and people who block you, can't challenge you, don't see you in land visits, and can't join each other's classes or rooms; blocking also withdraws any challenge between you and ends a buddy pairing. A room's host can remove someone from the lobby, and they can't come back into that room. Reports go only to us; the person you report isn't told who sent the report.
Ads and your choices
The free version of the iOS and Android apps shows ads from Google AdMob: ads among the Home and Buddies lists, full-screen ads between activities, and ads you choose to watch for bonus XP or for a hint during an activity. To show, limit and measure ads and to prevent fraud, Google may collect your device's advertising ID (on iOS, only if you allow tracking), your IP address and the approximate location it suggests, device and app information, and how you interact with ads.
- In the EEA, the UK and Switzerland, and wherever else the law requires it, the app asks for your choices through Google's consent form before personalised ads are shown. Change them any time in Profile → Settings → Ad privacy choices (shown where it applies).
- On iOS, the app asks Apple's permission to track. Change it in iOS Settings → Privacy & Security → Tracking.
- On Android, you can reset or delete your advertising ID in your device's Google or privacy settings.
- Ads are limited to content suitable for general audiences with parental guidance (PG).
- Pro members see no ads, and the web app has none.

International transfers
We are in Vietnam, our database is in Japan, and Cloudflare, RevenueCat, Apple and Google may handle information in the United States and other countries. So your information may be handled outside the country where you live, where privacy laws may differ. Where the law requires it, these transfers rely on safeguards such as the standard contractual clauses our providers offer.
How long we keep it
- Account, profile, progress, word banks, buddies and blocks: until you delete your account.
- Classes: a class you host lasts until you close it or delete your account. Your place in other classes lasts until you leave, are removed, the class closes, or you delete your account. When you leave or are removed, your unfinished tasks go, but your finished task results and the cheers you sent stay in the class.
- Rooms and their results: rooms aren't deleted when they finish. Your part (name, avatar and results) is deleted with your account, and a room is deleted with its host's account.
- Guest sessions: the random ID, the name and avatar, the results in rooms, and a Pro bought as a guest stay on our servers; they aren't deleted automatically. A guest has no email address we can check, so to ask us to remove one, write to us with a room code, roughly when it was, and the name used.
- Reports: kept as long as needed to handle them and keep Voca Fun safe, then deleted.
- Purchase records: kept by Apple, Google and RevenueCat under their own policies and as tax and accounting laws require.
- Server logs and backups: kept by our providers for a limited time, after which they are deleted or overwritten.
Deleting your account
In any Voca Fun app (iOS, Android or web), go to Profile → Delete account. This permanently deletes your account, profile, progress, word banks, buddies, blocks, class memberships and task progress, and closes the classes you host (their members get a notice). It can't be undone.
- Deleting your account doesn't cancel Pro. Cancel it in your App Store or Google Play subscriptions first.
- What stays: reports other learners sent about you (kept for safety, as above); reports you sent, no longer linked to you in our database (the email alert we got about each one keeps your name); notices already sent to other members, which may still show your name and avatar (for example that you finished a task, or that your class closed); and purchase records kept by Apple, Google and RevenueCat. Ask us and we'll also delete your RevenueCat record.
- Can't open the app? Write to hello@vocafun.com from the email address of your account, and we'll delete it for you.
Your choices and rights
In the app you can change your name and avatar (Profile → Edit profile), block and unblock people (Profile → Blocked people), leave classes, remove buddies, turn off streak reminders, change your ad choices, sign out, and delete your account.
Depending on where you live, you may also have the right to: know what we hold and get a copy; correct it; delete it; restrict or object to its use; take it with you; withdraw consent; and complain to a data protection authority. These include your rights under the EU and UK GDPR, Vietnam's Law on Personal Data Protection, and US state privacy laws.
US state privacy laws: we don't sell personal information for money. Personalised ads from Google in the free version may count as "sharing" or "targeted advertising" under some state laws; you can opt out by limiting ad tracking on your device as described above, or by getting Pro.
To use any of these rights, write to hello@vocafun.com, from your account's email address if you can, so we know the account is yours. It's free. We'll answer within one month, or sooner where the law requires, and we won't treat you differently for asking.
Children
Voca Fun isn't directed at children under 13, and you must be at least 13 to use it. If you're under 16, or under the age where you live at which you can agree to this on your own, you may use Voca Fun only with a parent's or guardian's permission. If you believe a child under 13 has given us personal information, write to hello@vocafun.com and we'll delete it.
Security
Information travels over encrypted connections (HTTPS/TLS) and is encrypted at rest by Supabase. Database rules and server functions limit what each learner can read and change. Passwords are stored only as hashes, and wrong class passwords and buddy codes are limited to stop guessing. Names other learners read (display names, class names and notes, task and word-bank names) are checked automatically against a list of offensive words. Class passwords are stored so the class host can see and share them, so never use a password you use anywhere else. No service is perfectly secure; if a breach affects your information, we'll tell you and the authorities as the law requires.
Reminders
Stella's streak reminders, class deadline reminders and other news (for example new tasks, members joining or finishing, buddy requests, cheers, nudges and missed challenges) are notifications the app creates on your device. Voca Fun doesn't use a push service, so no notification token is sent to us. Turn streak reminders off in the app, and any of them in your device's notification settings.
Changes to this policy
When this policy changes, we'll update this page and the date at the top. For important changes, we'll also tell you in the app before they apply.
Version history
- October 23, 2026: first published version.
- October 23, 2026, update: you can buy Pro without an account, and a guest's Pro moves to your account when you sign in.
